Celebrating Trombone Artistry – Music, People, Instruments, History

“The trombone is the true head of the family of wind instruments… it has all the serious and powerful tones of sublime musical poetry, from religious, calm and imposing accents to savage, orgiastic outburst.”
— Hector Berlioz

Who is the best player today? Or, who is the best player of all time? Or, who is the best player in this or that genre?

These questions aren’t relevant to my way of thinking about trombone artists.

Every highly accomplished player is a gem. They are to be treasured and their playing is to be enjoyed. Comparing one to the other in terms of who is “better” isn’t going to be part of the discussions on this web site.

The same goes for players who are early in their journey of developing playing skill and artistry. I celebrate even the smallest improvement every striving player achieves.
